As lesser quantities of vegetables arrive at Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, the prices of vegetables have doubled!

Due to the severe summer period, there has been a great reduction in the growth and hence the quantity of vegetables arriving at Koyambedu. This has caused a sharp increase in vegetable prices.

Monsoon failed last year. Because of the, the harvest in various didstricts of Tamil Nadu was less. The reduced quantities transported to Koyambedu have resulted in increased prices.

Last week, the price of beans in wholesale market was rs. 30/- per kg; in retail market, it was Rs. 35/- per kg. On Wednesday, the price jumped to double. The wholesale price is Rs. 60/- per kg and the retail, Rs. 70/- per kg.

The price of flat beans has increased from Rs. 30/- per kg to Rs. 60/- per kg. Quite strangely, the price of small (‘sambar’) onion, which usually goes up during this part of the year, is Rs. 30/- per kg.

Currently, the small onion is not transported from the Northern States. Over the last 2 years, supplies of small onions from the Northern States help keep the prices pegged steady.
