Fire at State Bank of India in Parrys

A devastating fire swept through the second floor of a British-era structure housing two State Bank of India branches on Beach Road in Parrys on Saturday afternoon. The fire that broke out around 3.30pm was brought under control after five hours, but not before parts of the wooden floor collapsed on to the lower floor. SBI chief general manager said 40 employees were in the building at the time of the accident, but nobody was injured.

A day after a major fire damaged the heritage building that housed the State Bank of India branch at Parrys Corner here, staff led by senior officials spent a busy Sunday salvaging cash, documents and equipment from the building, braving smoke that continued to emanate and even rumours of a fresh fire.

Bank officials, who were at the spot, said the shifting was almost over by evening. An SBI official said computers, cash and files were being taken to three different bank branches.
