Chennai Metro Rail Project: Tunnelling work 60% complete!

Chennai Metro Trail Project officials informed that 60% tunnelling work has been completed.

With the primary objective of reducing traffic congestion, Chennai Metro Rail project was started covering a total distance of 45 km in 2 separate route at a cost of Rs. 14,600 Crores.

Out of the total of 45 km, 24 km will be underground tunnel and 21 km will be on elevated corridor. There will be 32 stations – 19 underground & 13 on the elevated corridor.

12 Giant Boring machines are operated to drill underground tunnels at 45 feet below ground level.

Total tunnelling distance is 36,308 metres long. So far, 29,912 metres of tunnelling work has been laid. The status as on 22nd September is that 60% tunnelling work is complete.

The distance between two subsequent underground stations is known as ‘1 Tunnel section’. 40 tunnel sections are to be made in the project. So far, 23 tunnel sections have been completed.

Double-track laying work has been completed 100% in the section between Washermanpet & Thirumangalam. The construction of 5 stations, High Court, Kilpauk, Pachaiyappa’s College, Anna Nagar Tower, and Thirumangalam has been completed.
