2300 speed-breakers are being built along different bus routes and inner road around the city of Chennai as per IRC (Indian Road Congress) recommendations.
Currently, the existing speed-breakers are built and located in a random manner.
IRC has recommended the specific dimensions (height, breadth, and length) of the speed-breakers.
Chennai mayor had informed a few months ago that all speed-breakers will be removed and reinstalled as per IRC standards. Subsequently, the number of speed-breakers was counted and some unwanted ones were removed.
In consulation with IRC, new locations for the proposed speed-breakers were decided.
Accordingly, 2300 new speed-breakers are being laid across the different bus routes and inner roads of the city.
So far, 393 speed-breakers have been completed. On the bus routes, 50 speed-breakers have been laid out of the planned 139.
Location-wise, there will be maximum number of speed-breakers in Anna Nagar – 340, Kodambakkam – 256, Manali -253, Teynampet – 244, and Adyar – 217.
On the minimum number of spped-breakers, it will be Sholinganallur – 31, Madhavaram – 55, Alandur -72, Ambattur – 77, Thiruvotriyur – 88, and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar – 88.
There will be 155 speed-breakers in Tondiarpet, 142 in Royapruam, 1129 in Valasaravakkam, and 159 in Perungudi.
It is expected that the project will be completed within the next month. The contractors are being paid only after thorough quality checks as per IRC standards.
