Auspiciousness of Aadi Ammavasai

The no moon day of Tamil Month Aadi is called Aadi Ammavasai. This is considered to e very auspicious to perform rituals to the dead such as Shradh and Tarpan. This year, the Aadi Ammavasai falls on 14th of August. This day is also an auspicious day for lord Muruga. You can find sacred rivers and spots, teerths and riverbanks getting dotted with performance of rites for dead ancestors.

Hindus take holy bath in various rivers, sacred ponds, teerthams, and even sea. There are thousands of Hindus who practice rituals for their dead ancestors at Agni Theertham in Rameswaram, Thriveni Sangamam in Kannyakumari and couple of other spots at banks of Cauvery river.

Furthermore, fasting performed on Aadi Ammavasai is considered to be of great power. Most devotees have meal just once on this day. This month is so special for lord Muruga. Several Pooja and Abhishegams are performed for the lord. It is believed that devotees will turn pure out of all their sins by having a holy dip in Shanmuga river in Palani on the day of Aadi Ammavasai.

As a mark of respect and thanksgiving people also tonsure their head at Palani Muruga Temple on the day.
