In order to prevent the circulation of black money, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced on 8th November that Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes have been declared invalid. In lieu of this new Rs 2000 and Rs 500 currency notes were printed and circulated.

An RTI query was sent to be RBI seeking information regarding the quantum of new currency notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 printed before the announcement of demonetization on November 8.

The RBI had forwarded this letter to Bhartiya Reserve Bank Note (P) Limited, Bengaluru which is wholly owned subsidiary of RBI. Bhartiya Reserve Bank Note (P) Limited examined the letter and said that it cannot give information under section 8  (1) (a) of the RTI Act since it would affect the country’s economic situation.
