It is likely that the cycle sharing system under the Non-Motorized Transport Policy is set to get rolled out in Chennai. The smart city mission is to be thanked, as it wiped away all the scheme files that were laid for many years.
According to the civic body, it is mandatory to implement bi-cycle sharing system at the NMT policy that got drafted in 2014. Speaking about this, a senior Chennai Corporation official said they had forwarded a feasibility study about the possibility of implementing the scheme to a consultant back in 2015. Now, a comprehensive project report is ready and the scheme is likely to get implemented using private service provider.
With the help of smart city funds, the scheme shall get implemented. In spite of having over 378 cycle parking slots with a total capacity of 4,976 bicycles, the service provider will be the deciding party in terms of increasing the total cycle count and parking slots, said an official.
At Rs 9.49 crore estimate
The total cost of bi-cycles will be Rs 5.7 crore and that of parking slots will be Rs 1.13 crore. Use of technology will add up the cost furthermore. The project will be implemented at an overall estimate of Rs 9.49 crore, the official said. After making a thorough study, the fee to be collected from users shall be worked out, said an official.
Schools, colleges and metros to get them first
The cycle sharing slots are likely to get launched close to schools, colleges, metro railway stations, bus terminus, recreational centers, parks, etc. where last mile connectivity is needed.
The officials further state that this proposal will be taken forward to the Board of Chennai Smart City Limited after which the cycle sharing system would get implemented once the board provides administrative sanction.
