There are contrasting opinions about applying oil to the head for the nourishment of hair - that is good for the hair growth and it is not.

  • It is worthwhile to analyse why it is indeed necessary to apply oil on the head:
  • Applying oil prevents hair fall and also strengthens the hair.
  • It is narrated that the women of the earlier eras used to apply mustard oil or pilu oil (Pilu oil is an extract from seeds of the Pilu tree, the Meswak tree, and the Mustard tree). However, presently, most of the women apply either coconut oil or gingely (til) oil on their heads. This tradition is indeed a matter of pride for us as both the oils are excellent for the hair.
  • Both gingely (til) oil and coconut oil are rich in Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Iron. Gingely oil contains Vitamin E which prevents hair decay.
  • If the people with bronze-colored hair apply gingely oil, there are prospects of that bronze colour fading away. For the people with dry hair and dandruff problem, the itch will reduce on applying oil.
  • It is advisable to follow 2 routines – applying oil once a week before taking bath and applying oil daily after the bath.
  • It is just sufficient if the oil is applied uniformly throughout the head. It is not at all necessary to apply excessively making the hair soggy and damp.
  • For those who are allergic to oil and those who have oily hair, it is better to avoid applying oil on the head.
  • It is just ok to use the organic gingely oil or coconut oil.
  • Take doctor’s advice in case you want to use synthetic hair oils. Do not simply fall prey to the advertisements and start using these without any medical advice.
