Due to sever downpour in Nilgiris, Coimbatore and parts of Karnataka, there is dip in vegetable supply at Koyambedu market, Chennai. This has reflected in hike in rates.
Below is the list of vegetables that have seen price hike
- Beans: Last week price Rs 55; Current price Rs 70
- Brinjal: Last week price Rs 20; Current price Rs 35
- Onions: Present rate Rs 16
- Shallot: Present rate Rs 40
- Bitter gourd: Present rate Rs 40
- Potato: Present rate Rs 21
- Radish: Present rate Rs 25
- Cabbage: Present rate Rs 8
- Carrot: Present rate Rs 28
- Beetroot: Present rate Rs 30
- Drumstick: Present rate Rs 30
- Green chillies: Present rate Rs 35
Below are a few vegetables that have not seen much hike price and sold for the respective rates mentioned:
- Tomatoes: Present rate Rs 14
- Broad beans Rs 30
- Ladys Finger Rs 15
- Snake gourd Rs 15
In his note about this, the General Secretary of Tamil Nadu Flower Vegetable & Fruit Traders Welfare Association says rainfall in Karnataka, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, etc. have got intensified due to which the usual supply volume is hit. As the harvesting period has got over, there is dip in supply of veggies like brinjal. These have altogether accounted to the increase in rates of vegetables. It is likely that the vegetable rates will remain high for one more month.
