Child Rights and You (CRY) one of India’s leading NGO’s organized a Walkathon at Besant Nagar beach to raise awareness on the issue of child labour. Around 300 people assembled and thereafter walked for 4 kilometers to show their solidarity towards the cause.
The event was spearheaded by CRY in association with Inner Wheel Chennai Capital 323. The motive was to give the fight against child labour a shape and purpose by bringing people from different societal background to take up the cause.
“Child labour is a burning issue of the modern world. We wanted to make people aware of the truth of child labour through an event that gives them the opportunity to show their support. At CRY we walk the talk and this Walkathon was an extension of that. Lack of education has direct implication on a child making them more vulnerable in being a child labor. This needs to stop at the earliest as we continue our stand against any form of labour for the child,” said Suma Ravi- Regional Director of Child Rights and You (CRY).
“It was heartening to see people come forward and own the cause. It was not the distance they walked but their support that will help us strengthen our stand against child labour. The problem of child labour and its impact needs to be highlighted more and this a great start to make the cause a movement,” said Reshma Kriplani Incoming President, Inner Wheel Chennai Capital 323.
Child labour is increasingly being considered as an acceptable norm in society as people tend to see it as a means for underprivileged families to make ends meet. There are 10.13 million child labourers between 5-14 years in India (Census-2011). Out of which Tamil Nadu has 2, 84,232 and Chennai 26,527 number of children working as child laborers.
