The latest news is there would be a regional plan for the rest of the state of Tamil Nadu and that plan would be centred around the eight major cities namely Coimbatore, Salem, Vellore, Madurai, Trichy etc. This new regional plan for 8 major cities of TN is spoken by many now.

Identification of the infrastructure facilities plus transportation amenities for the local population while maintaining sustainable growth is important and this was confirmed by the housing and urban development department sources.

For the above mentioned purpose about 4 to 5 districts would be zoned into a region and various aspects would be part of the regional planning and connectivity would also be present. This was confirmed by an official. It is known that more than half the population of TN State is present in the urban areas. Hence it is very much needed now. Regional planning would include utilization of dry lands for the developmental and infrastructural projects.

For sustainable development of rural as well as urban settlements plus identification of prime cultivatable land and environmentally sensitive areas, transportation, power and water, social infrastructure, disaster management, heritage spots, tourism spots etc, the regional plan provides a model. The state government in its 2015-17 budget had announced regional plans for Salem, Coimbatore, Chengalpattu regions covering an area of 13,314 sq kms is known.

It is important to mention that Thiruvallur was added in the next financial year to the above list but nothing took place as per the state government announcement. Soon both Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts would become a part of CMDA. One important point to note is it would be the first time ever the TN state would be involved in preparing regional plans for 8 cities. The housing and urban development department would be carrying out the process using new technology.
