As the strike by the lorry owners enters the 4th consecutive day, there is a 10% increase in the prices of vegetables as they are now brought through other means of transport such as vans, mini buses, and buses to the Chennai Koyambedu Wholesale Vegetable Supermarket.
The country-wide strike by the Lorry Owners is continuing as a protest and various demands including the petrol and diesel prices to be brought under the GST domain. Today (Monday, 23rd July) is the 4th day of the strike. Because of the transport of vegetables scheduled to arrive from the other districts such as Kovai and Thiruvallur and other states to the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market has been very adversely affected.
Over 350 truckloads through lorries containing over 7000 tonnes of vegetables, flowers, and fruits are transported from places such as Oddanchathram and Nilgiris, and states of Karnataka, Andhra, Telangana, and Maharashtra.
With the lorries on strike, the transport of the vegetables, fruits, and flowers was done through other avenues such as mini-buses, bans, and buses.
As the quantity of coconuts and small onions arriving from the above places has reduced, their prices have gone up.
As the strike continues for the 4th day, around 7 Lakh drivers have been rendered jobless. Further, goods worth several crores of Rupees are stagnated.
With the price egg shooting up to Rs. 7 per piece and a 10% increase in the prices of the vegetables such as tomato, potato, brinjal, bitter gourd, etc., the public has been put to huge hardship.
