Setting aside the value additions, there will be fewer pages in the new class-12 science books as compared to the older versions of Samacheer textbooks. Speaking about this, G. Arivoli, the Director of Tamil Nadu State Council for Educational Research and Training (TNSCERT) says there will however be 5 to 7.5 percent increase in the total content. The necessary preparatory works are being carried out and by December this year, the books will be ready for getting printed. There will be no kind of distribution delay unlike the present year, he adds.

It has been 10 years that the state education department has been following the same curriculum and has now got changed. Critics across Tamil Nadu have also poured in their positive reviews for this revision in textbooks.

Teachers union sources say that books, especially that of class-11 had to bear with the voluminous textbooks which in fact made them drop out of their higher secondary course.

Arivoli adds that the new textbooks are far friendly to the students. Say, the botany textbooks earlier had 260 pages, and the new one has 325 pages, but has a lot of attractive pictures and fonts. The questions will however be asked from the older 230 pages as the remaining are value additions for carrier guidance, tips and ideas for learning, NEET questions, mind-mapping, etc.

The average words in a book is raised from earlier 62,000 to 66000.

The panel of members preparing new text books includes experts and others who have earlier worked on revision in textbook last year. They are mainly from different universities and boards that come under the Central Board of Secondary Education. The core committee that was formed last year for revision of curriculum and syllabus however remains unchanged.

The new team is discussing with stakeholders for getting feedback for the new books for class 1, 6, 9 and 11. Class 10 books are done and corrections are on the go now.
