Road safety is very important and this would reduce the accidents taking place. There are many state as well as national highway roads in the state of Tamil Nadu and these are highly congested is well known. To improve the road safety and thereby reduce the accidents taking place, the government of TN has planned to install CCTV cameras to monitor the vehicles on the state and national highway roads.

On the National Highway 45, the pilot project between Chennai city and Trichy would be implemented. It is clear that during the first phase about 280 km of National Highway road would be brought under surveillance cameras. An amount of Rs 25 crores would be spent for this purpose. This was confirmed by the minister for transport, Mr. M.R. Vijayabhaskar. On Tuesday, 4th September 2018, a meeting took place at an MTC central depot and at this meeting the transport minister spoke about the installation of cameras. Vehicles speed, GPS location and vehicular traffic on the road with control room would be shared by the advanced cameras.

A team of dedicated professionals would be monitoring the CCTV cameras that would be installed at the accident prone places. Monitoring the vehicular congestion at the toll plazas would also be there. This was confirmed by the sources. This installation of cameras would be superb as it would reduce the road traffic accident response time by ambulance services from the present time of 15 minutes to 10 minutes.

In the year 2016, the average road traffic accident response time by ambulance services was 18 minutes and it reduced to 15 minutes in 2017. An official later spoke about how this vehicle monitoring system would further reduce the time to less than 10 minutes.

The interesting fact that has come out from the NHAI or National Highway Authority of India is every day about 1.29 lakh vehicles passes the Vanagaram tollgate on the Chennai bypass road. As many as 95230 vehicles cross the Paranur tollgate on NH 45 whose new number is NH 32.

The official later explained about how throughout the year the 4 lane Chennai-Tindivanam section remains highly congested. Thousands of vehicles pile up in front of tollgate at Paranur, Athur, Vikravandi, Senguruchi, Thirumandurai and Samayapuram between Tambaram and Trichy. He also spoke about how digital boards are used to display the vehicular traffic status at 6 tollgates.

In the state of Tamil Nadu, the total length of national highway roads is about 5324 km. NHAI plays its part in maintaining 3285 km roads and National Highways wing of the state government maintains 2039 km roads. The length of the State Highway roads is 12093km.It is important to mention here that in 2016 in TN the road accidents claimed about 17281 lives and in the year 2017 the number was reduced to 16157.
