Vegetable prices in retail and wholesale witnessed a steady market as the result of Kerala floods. The water disaster in God’s own country redirected other states’ vegetable distribution in Tamil Nadu. This was considered to be a main reason for the prices of vegetables in both retail and wholesale markets not going up.
In spite of the Purattaasi month where majority of people choose vegetarian food the prices of perishable vegetable goods retained the same market value owing to the sudden redistribution. The retail price of Brinjal was Rs 15 per Kg, Bellary Onion for Rs 20 per Kg, staple tomato at Rs 15 per Kg, beans sold for Rs 30 per Kg. Potatoes were selling at a price of Rs 20 per Kg while Ladies finger cost Rs 15 per Kg.
Since the month of August prices remained the same in Koyambedu Vegetables, Fruits and Flower Merchant Association mainly attributed to the floods caused in Kerala. Due to the continuous rains the supply of vegetables from other southern states increased rapidly in Tamil Nadu especially in Koyambedu said the treasurer of the association P Sukumar. This lead to the less price fluctuations mainly in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
Adequate rains in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh accounted for large supply of vegetables to Chennai. Southern and western zones of Tamil Nadu also received good rains resulting in the undisturbed vegetable distribution in the city.
Bellary Onions are obtained from Maharastra while Tomatoes from Karnataka. Brinjal is received from Andhra Pradesh and Yam from Telangana. Noolkol, Beetroot and Cauliflower from Kolar, Karnataka. Vegetables such as Bitter Gourd, Snake Gourd and Cluster beans are procured from Vellore district.
Throughout the past the vegetable rates go up in the month of Purattaasi and to the surprise the current scenario is very stable in terms of prices. In spite of the fuel price hike the vegetable rates didn’t fall into the upward spiral in this month. But the sources from Koyambedu market said the prices may slightly go up in the coming weeks of the month.
