Chennai ranks fourth among the noisiest cities of India

In a study conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board on noise pollution ranges of ambient sounds of metropolitan cities and other important regions of India. Delhi tops the list with highest levels of noise pollution. In this study named as Status of Ambient Noise Level in India 2017 the data reveals other major cities with high noise pollution. Kolkata and Bengaluru holds the second and third place and Chennai marked to the fourth place.

The data included many important cities of India with various information and practical analysis of ambient noises. A 2016 report listed Chennai as second noisiest city after Hyderabad. To the surprise the noise levels in Chennai was much reduced in many areas such as T Nagar, Guindy Industrial Estate, Triplicane residential zones and Sowcarpet. Pallikaranai, T Nagar and Velachery are listed as noisiest zones of Chennai with residential, traffic based noises and high population accumulated as a result of IT companies.

Pallikaranai sound levels ranges between 62 and 68 decibels on an average with daytime range going up from 63 to 87 decibels. In T.Nagar the sound levels ranges between 66 and 80 decibels. Many hearing and neurotic damages can occur from increasing decibel ranges of the surrounding atmosphere. Sleep disruptions and other brain disorders happens with the increased stress for ear drums that can handle only 40 decibels at a time.
It is an important duty for Pollution control bodies of the nation to ensure safe noise levels in cities. Noise monitoring network programme was introduced to govern and control high noise pollution in specifies areas.
