To harness solar energy CMRL or Chennai Metropolitan Rail Limited has done this. The CMRL has installed as many as 4 solar panels on the roofs of 4 metro stations plus at the Koyambedu metro depot. This has caught the attention now and is spoken in high esteem by many.

According to the joint director of CMRL, Mr. S. Pandian, CMRL is committed to achieve energy security plus in the reduction of carbon emission and in the promotion of green energy concept by generating renewable energy. It is superb to mention that as many as 4 underground metro stations like Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar Tower, Anna Nagar East and Shenoy Nagar metro stations have been installed with solar panels on their roofs. Koyambedu metro depot which includes metro washing unit and other facilities has been fitted with solar panel. He later spoke about the advantages of the installation of solar panels on these 4 metro stations. It is now confirmed by Mr. Pandian that around 13800 units per month would be generated by these solar panels on the 4 metro stations plus it would save an amount of Rs 634744 lakhs in a year.

As per a report given by Greenpeace India and Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute or GERMI, Chennai has got the potential to harness enough solar energy to reduce the need for electricity by atleast 20 percent. It must be noted that the report titled ‘Rooftop Revolution: Unleashing Chennai’s Rooftop Potential’ found that the rooftop potential of Chennai city was 1380 Megawatt or MW. There are many landmarks in the city of Chennai and these landmarks have sizeable solar power potential. The MRTS or Mass Rapid Transit System railway station roofs have solar power potential of 3582 kW. Similarly metro station roofs have potential of 1696 kW, bus depot roofs (938kW) and Chennai international airport (889 kW). At the moment a total of 103 kWp Roof Top Solar PV Power System is being generated from the metro stations. It is brought out that the installed capacity of roof top solar power by CMRL is 1.6 MW. By the end of the 2018 there would be another 6 MW rooftop solar power installation and this is under progress now. It is said that the elevated metro stations would also go green by this installation. In the year 2016 CMRL turned many heads by using clean energy when it installed 1MW capacity solar panel at the administrative building is known.
