The state of Tamil Nadu had witnessed series of public structure collapses in the last year is well known. Hence making constructions of public structures safe is very important. For this purpose PWD or Public Works Department has released a handbook for the government engineers dealing with constructions. This handbook is named as ‘Technical handbook on building construction for field engineers’. This handbook deals with many aspects in the areas of civil engineering, quality of construction materials plus maintenance and demolition of public structures. It is important to have flawless structural stability for the buildings and the handbook also has got lots of information in this and it explores the importance of flawless structural stability of the buildings.
As an alternative to the river sand, M- Sand or manufactured sand has been used in the building sector. The official belonging to PWD spoke about how to know about the quality of the M-sand that is used for construction on the spot testing methods have been suggested. It must be noted that testing could also be carried out in the laboratories to know about the sand quality.
It is known that PWD is responsible for constructions and maintenance of majority of the state government buildings. The point is as many as 6 departments and boards like rural development and panchayat raj, municipal administration, GCC, TNHB, Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation have got their own construction wings. The sources have said that this is the first time PWD has released a handbook for the public buildings constructed by the departments outside its purview.
It must not be forgotten that in the year 2017 in the month of October a portion of roof of a four decade old building belonging to the TNSTC collapsed in the district of Nagapattinam. In the month of September in 2017, the news regarding collapse of cantilever roof structure of a bus stand at Karumathampatti town panchayat in Coimbatore district that killed five persons shocked many.
