In the state of Tamil Nadu, SETC or State Express Transport Corporations has been operating as many as 1100 long distance buses. Many people use these buses to reach their places in TN. The buses also ply on as many as 250 routes in the neighbouring states like AP, Karnataka and Kerala.
It is well known that SETC had introduced air-conditioned sleeper buses and ultra deluxe buses having toilet facilities. This has not created great impact on the passengers and patronage has been declining. The important piece of information is booking of a seat in the long distance government buses has become much easier now as these buses have been listed on Red Bus and other private booking app since the second week of December. This was made in a bid to check the drop in the patronage. SETC is one of the 8 state owned transport corporations and it had linked its online bus booking services to Red Bus and Bus India. It is brought out that soon Paytm would also be added to the list. This step was taken in the first phase. SETC made many heads turn when in the month of July 2018 it adopted flexi fare model that is reducing the fares on the weekdays. To attract more passengers, boarding points were shifted from Koyambedu to Egmore and Adyar is known. Now in an effort to continue this drive of increasing more passengers, SETC has listed its bus services on the private bus booking apps.
A senior official belonging to SETC sounded optimistic regarding the number of passengers using the SETC buses and said passengers would be able to compare the ticket rates of both private as well as government buses. He also spoke about how the government buses charge less than half of what the private buses charge in most of the cases. He assured that there would be more passengers using government buses to reach their places of destination. It must be noted that during the festival, except for the special buses there is no surge pricing for SETC buses. The techies who often visit their native places during the weekends and depend on apps for booking tickets would be highly benefited by this. The official of SETC explained about the easiness of the apps and said these apps were simple when compared to the website of TNSTC. He also threw light on better server backup. The passengers, when they book their tickets, would be able to get the contact details of the conductor. The pickup points as well as expected time of arrival of the buses could be tracked. One sensational piece of news is when GPS or global positioning system fitted with these buses is linked with these apps then it would be possible to even track the movement of buses live.
The SETC official finally spoke about how the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation or KSRTC after joining hands with private firms have been highly successful and how the initiative is based on the success of this KSRTC.
