Established in the year 1881, Chennai port or Madras port is the 3rd largest container port of India and it is just behind Navi Mumbai`s Nhava Sheva and Gujarat’s Mundra port. The superb fact is Chennai port is also the third oldest port among 13 major ports of India. This Chennai port is now making news. It is now revealed that the Chennai port trust would soon apply for the revised CRZ or Coastal Regulation Zone clearance for the fresh alignment of Chennai port- Maduravoyal elevated corridor project. Recently DPR or detailed project report for the revised alignment of 20 km long Rs 2500 crores project was submitted. The chairman of Chennai port trust, Mr. Raveendran hinted that in a month of time the application would be submitted.

He also explained about how the Anna University Remote Sensing department was entrusted with the DPR and work to prepare the application process. The papers are expected to be ready in another 2 weeks of time. The important information gathered was 50 percent of costs for land and resettlement was to be borne by the port and the rest by the state. Mr. Raveendran shed light on the extent of cost. He said the estimate has been revised and estimation of the extent of cost that must be paid would be done. This has been communicated to the ministry. The main advantage of this project is it would reduce the traffic congestion in the Chennai city plus it would also be beneficial to the port.

According to the Chennai port trust chairman, Mr. Raveendran, there is no traffic congestion inside the port and inspite of this the Gate 10 cannot be opened during the day time. There are also some gates that are closed permanently. He later pointed out about the importance of clean cargo. He spoke about how once the project is through the cargo from Sriperumbudur could have an easy access. He added that NHAI is the implementing agency and port is the project proponent. The important point is the Navy has agreed in principle to swap lands with the port for building entry/exit ramps. In the year 2010 this project was first started and in the year 2012 the project was stopped because the state had objected to the alignment. There were many discussions and court cases regarding this project and finally the government asked NHAI to provide fresh proposal on the realignment of the corridor.
