Plans to relocate bus stops to get closer to the Chennai Metro Stations will soon become a reality. This is believed to improve connectivity between transport systems.

For this, the Bus Route Division under the Chennai Corporation has handpicked a few bus stops which includes LIC, Teynampet, and Nandanam Military Quarters. The necessary works shall soon begin.

A unified transport system is one that has better connectivity with metro stations and bus stops lying close to each other. according to the transport officials, bus services and train services are entirely different, but the commuters will have better usage and convenience in the bus stops lie in close proximity to the Metro stations.

A lot of commuters have complained about the far away distance of bus stops from the CMRL stations. Especially, after the compete launch of phase-1 of the Chennai metro services, with the changes in having bus stops close to metro stations, commuters will have better transportation facilities and metro to see improved patronage.

When the bus stops are located at too far distance, it is not really encouraging to use the metro services. Some of the bus stops that are located far from metro includes the Military quarters, Saidapet, SIET College, LIC, Nandanam Military Quarters, etc.

On the other hand, a few other commuters blame about bus stops lying along the metro route covering Alandur and Chennai central that Shenoy Nagar, Vadapalani, and Arumbakkam have got bus terminus at distant locations. So, people in these localities tend to walk for longer distance to reach the metro while compared to the commuters at Ashok Pillar or Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, and Koyambedu.

One of the residents in Kilpauk says that they have the Shenoy Nagar station as the nearest one. They are not interested in using the metro because of the long distance of bus stop. I would better go for a bus journey, he says.

According to MTC senior officials, bus stop installation and maintenance works are being carried out normally under the Chennai Corporation. The MTC doesn’t have anything to comment on this.

In July 2018, MTC officials, the civic body and Metro officials inspected the possible bus stops which can be shifted closer to metro stations.
