As there is drastic monsoon deficit, Chennai city is experiencing lack of drinking water by 44 percent. There is only 1TMC water present in reservoirs providing drinking water across Chennai. This has turned into a major issue.

On behalf of 15 lakh Chennaites covering including Chennai IT corridor, the Federation of Residents has come up with a written appeal to all the election candidates where they seek for the respective candidate’s ideas as to how they would ensure proper drinking water supply and underground sewage.

Each and every family here has been paying Rs 1200 towards water tax, but there is not any portable water or sewage system. Annually, for purchase of water and to clear out sewage, the families spend about Rs 30,000.

This is a form of literal looting, says one of the group members. One other member says there is a miserable failure of the system.

The most prominent issue in the election system is water.

Back in 2015, there was unprecedented flood in Chennai city. And it had devastated the savings and complete living and belongings of 4 lakh families. It is 4 years now, but still there is no proper functional storm water drains, and also there is not any proper measure for saving water.

Coming on to the promises of Makkal Needhi Mayyam, the party headed by actor-turned –politician Kamal Hassan, his party assures free drinking water to the people.
