The Director of the Chennai Meteorological Centre Balachandran has informed that the prevailing depression zone may transform into a cyclone and there are prospects of very heavy rains in 20 districts in Tamil Nadu State.
The director shared with the press in this regard:
‘The low-pressure zone which formed over the Kanyakumari Ocean has strengthened into a strong depression zone. There are prospects that this may transform into a cyclone in the next 24 hours.
As this depression zone may drift towards the northeast, there are prospects of very heavy rains in the next 2 days in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
There are prospects of heavy to very heavy rain over the next 2 days in 20 districts of Tamil Nadu including Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Pudhukkottai, Trichy, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Theni, Coimbatore, Dindigul, and the delta districts.
The fishermen in the areas of Kanyakumari Ocean, Mannar Bay, Maldives, and Lakhdiv are warned not to venture into the sea.
Over the last 24 hours, the maximum rainfall of 19 cm has been recorded in Tiruthani.
