Conversion of 3 passenger trains with conventional rakes to mainline electric multiple units or MEMU rakes has been carried out by the southern railways now. This would be highly beneficial for daily passengers.

It is worthy to note that there would be 50 percent increase in the seating capacity plus the trains would be more punctual as the trains would have better acceleration as well as deceleration. This was later brought out by a senior official.

Point is starting from Wednesday, 11TH December the 56867/68 Chennai Egmore- Puducherry passenger would run with 12 car MEMU rakes and from 26th December the 56059/60 Tambaram- Villupuram passenger would run with 12 car MEMU rakes.

The 56007/08/09/10/13/14 passenger trains between Arakkonam-Katpadi-Vellore would run with 8 car MEMU rakes. A superb piece of information is these MEMUs have been built by ICF with the latest technology and they have toilets etc. This was confirmed by an official.

There are many infringements present on the Chennai-Chengalpet section that is to be removed and this was according to the recommendations made by the Commissioner of Railway Safety or CRS after the St Thomas Mount incident in 2018. As a result, the southern railway was waiting to convert Chennai-Puducherry passenger trains to MEMU.

A senior official mentioned about the jam-packed trains with many people present near the doors risking their lives. He threw light on the Chennai-Puducherry passenger and spoke about the additional need for decongesting it. Important point is MEMU would solve the overcrowding issue. It was the railway board’s policy to replace conventional rakes of passenger trains with MEMU.

A few months back, southern railway grabbed many eyeballs when it initiated the process of converting conventional rakes to MEMU on a single line Alleppey- Kanyankulam section in Kerala.

It is superb to mention that 12-car MEMU improved the punctuality of the passenger trains running there. The point is a similar type of issues have cropped up on the Chennai- Chengalpet and Chennai-Arakkonam section and that was why MEMU rakes were inducted.

Important information is from Chennai-Villupuram there would not be issues regarding punctuality because of the presence dedicated corridor. From Villupuram- Puducherry section, punctuality would be improved.
