Onion prices in Chennai come down now due to the import

Onion prices have been escalating to huge levels in Chennai market in recent times is well known. This has made some traders export 35 tonnes of onions from a far country like Egypt etc.

The news that has come out now is the price of the premium quality onions have come down to Rs 130 per kilogram in the wholesale market in Chennai. Some types of onions were even sold for Rs 60 per kilogram. It must be taken into account that retail and neighbourhood shops sold onions at Rs 140 per kg to Rs 150 per kg.

For the last 3 days, markets in Chennai have been getting atleast 40 truckloads of onions from states like AP, Karnataka and Maharashtra. This was mentioned by some traders. It is sensational to note that the price of onions touched Rs 200 per kg last week.

It was revealed by Mr Chandran, president, Koyambedu Market Licensed Merchant’s Association that the quality of most onions was decent. He added that since the damage now is less many traders have not increased the prices of onions.

The prices of the onions would come down further in 2 weeks when the new yield reaches the market. Prices would come down to Rs 60 per kg if the new yield reaches the market before January. This was according to Mr Soundarajan, president of onion traders association.

A trader revealed how the onion stock is being routed through Mumbai port and within a few days, 500 tonnes of onions would be expected in TN.
