Onions, imported as an emergency measure from Egypt, has arrived at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market. As such, onion is now being sold at Rs. 100 per kg.

Usually, there is an excellent onion yield in the 3 states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra and then transported to Tamil Nadu. However, this year, the incessant excessive downpour of rain drastically affected the crops and the yield/growth of onion was negligible. Thus, the usual quantity of onion transported from these 3 states dwindled drastically leading to astronomical price increase which was sold at Rs. 200 per kg a few days ago!

Due to this crisis, the central government arranged to import 1.2 Lakhs tons of onion from Egypt and Turkey.

Onion imported from Egypt by air-conditioned ships reached Mumbai port. From here, 60 tons of onion was transported to Tamil Nadu and reached the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market day-before-yesterday (10th December).

Egypt onion is larger in size as compared to the onion grown in India. A single onion weighs as much as 200 grams to 300 grams.

This Egypt onion is sold in the market at Rs. 100 per kg.

Meanwhile, there has been an appreciable increase in the quantity of onion usually transported from Andhra, and Karnataka. So, onion grown in India is being sold at Rs. 100 to Rs. 120 per kg.

As on yesterday, after the receipt of the imported onion from Egypt, onion was sold at Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market at Rs. 96 to Rs. 100 per kg.

The traders shared in this regard:

‘As the onion imported from Egypt has arrived in air-conditioned ships, there is a need to dry them first! However, this imported onion is not as pungent as the Indian onion also, cutting this onion does not induce tears!

A point to note is that the Egypt onion will not last as long as the Indian onion! As such, it appears that there is more crowd to have a look at the imported Egypt onion rather than buying it!’
