The Connemara Public Library was first part of the Madras Museum. The books that were first kept at the Library were surplus books from the Haileybury College in England. The then Governor of Madras Lord Connemara laid the foundation stone for the Library in 1890. In 1948, the Library went under the State’s control and now runs under the Madras Public Libraries Act 1948.
The Connemara Library is one of the four National Depository Libraries in India. These Libraries receive all books, magazines and newspapers published in India. The Library also serves at a depository library for the United Nations.
The Connemara Public Library is situated in the Government Museum Complex on Pantheon Road in Egmore. It is easily approachable by public transport.
