The Chennai Corporation will commission the purchase of chapathi makers for the Amma canteens within three months. The decision was taken to be able to meet demands when the new menu that includes chapathis comes out in September. A plate of two chapathis will cost Rs. 3.
The equipment is estimated to cost Rs. 4 crore. If the women who work at the canteens were to make the chapathis, they would be able to make 50 chapathis per hour. However, with the chapathi makers, each canteen can churn out 3000 chapathis per hour. It is estimated that 4 lakh chapathis will be made a day across the canteens in the Chennai.
