By the month of September, the new integrated terminal would be opened at the Chennai airport and it would have better amenities and facilities for the passengers. This new integrated terminal would provide a link between domestic terminal and international terminal. This was according to some sources.
The lockdown to control the spread of Coronavirus has resulted in the delay in the opening of the new integrated terminal as the works were stopped. It was supposed to be opened in September 2020 itself and it would be delayed by a year. Yesterday, the officials discussed the ongoing work at the airport plus on the deadlines and other details about this project. It must be taken into account that the exact date about the completion of the project was not fixed formally but it was decided to complete at the earliest.
Shopping complex, multi-level car parking complex etc:
The information collected was that by September the operations of the new integrated terminal would start and facilities such as multi-level car parking complex plus shopping complex and entertainment area rooms etc would be taken up in the second phase. These would be completed by the year 2022.
Truth is that the original estimate for this project was Rs 2467 crores but now the cost of the estimate is likely to go more than Rs 3000 crores. In the year 2018, the work to connect domestic and international terminal started is well known. For the purpose of enhancing the facilities at the Chennai airport, it was planned to construct a multi-level car parking facility for accommodating 2000 cars plus shopping complex, entertainment area etc. Rooms for other passengers and VVIPs were also there in the plan.
It must be noted that in the phase one integrated terminal with 108 immigration counters, extra custom checking areas, baggage scanners and 15 new aerobridges were planned. Most of the workers were from north India and they went back to their homes due to the lockdown and this halted the work. Ever since some workers returned back from their places, the work has been going slowly due to delay in the supply of materials etc.
