In the southern suburbs of Chennai, there are 2 major lakes present namely Narayanapuram Lake and Keelkattalai Lake. It is learnt that TNPCB or Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and local bodies have done sample tests on these lakes and they have found that the water from these 2 lakes are safe and is fit for household usage.

In the past, the residents in these places complained about the poor water quality are well known. The sampling test report has come at this point of time. It must be taken into account that the residents were worried about the sewage contamination in the lakes for many years. As per the results, it was clear that neither bacteria nor chemicals were in excess to the prescribed limits. The TSS or Total Suspended Solids levels and TDS or Total Dissolved Solids levels were quite less than the prescribed limits.

It must be noted that in the Keelkattalai Lake the TSS were 14mg per litre and in Narayanapuram Lake the TSS were 20 mg per litre. The permissible level is 100mg per litres. In the Keelkattalai Lake, the TDS levels were 860mg per litre and 719 mg per litre in Narayanapuram Lake. The permissible limit is 2100 mg per litre.

The study has clearly shown that there is not much chemical content in both the lakes and not much sewage is being let out in both the lakes. The levels of iron, lead, nickel and zinc are also very low. This was as per an officer from TNPCB.
