One of the largest perishable goods market complexes in Asia is Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex of Chennai. Now, this important market is making news.

To control the spread of Coronavirus infection pandemic, TN government had announced that retail outlets of fruits and vegetable market at Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex or KWMC in Chennai to be shut down.

This made many traders worry more as they were already facing issues due to the lockdown in the past. On 9th April 2021, the traders grabbed eyeballs when they staffed a protest against the TN government order to shut down the retail outlets of the fruits and vegetable market at Koyambedu. Now, the CMDA official and the traders have sorted out the issue amicably by discussion.

Information is that the TN government has allowed semi wholesale and retail outlets to open 50% of their shops on rotation basis. It has been brought out that those shops with even numbers would remain open on Mondays, Wednesdays and on Fridays whereas those shops with odd numbers would remain open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The president of Koyambedu Semiwholesalers Welfare Association, Mr. S.S. Muthukumar spoke about how opening of the shops based on odd even numbers would be impractical. This was because of the fact that the arrangement of the shops vary in the 2 complexes and maintaining social distancing would be difficult. Mr. Muthukumar wanted the TN government to restrict the working time of the market and allow functioning of all the shops together like in the past.
