GEM Hospital Inaugurates Specialized Gastrointestinal Centre for kids in Tamilnadu

Prof. B. Krishna Rao, and Dr. N.Ezhilan, MLA, Thousand Lights, Chennai today inaugurated a comprehensive and first of its kind Specialized Gastrointestinal Centre for kids in Tamilnadu - ‘Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology” at GEM Hospital Chennai.
 
As a part of the function, “Powered Spiral Enteroscopy” - A new technique for endoscopic evaluation of the small bowel was also introduced at GEM Hospital. It is an innovative solution to diagnose and treat small intestine diseases. Only few centers in India have this facility.
 
On the occasion, Dr.C.Palanivelu, Founder & Chairman, GEM Hospitals said, “Digestive disorder in children is a growing burden in India. It can affect a child’s growth, mental development, and overall immunity because 70% of the immune system lies within the GI (Gastrointestinal) tract. Many children swallow foreign bodies which may be dangerous and life threatening and needs a specialized centre to remove them”. 

“According to WHO, 10% children have GI problems and that leads to multiple mental and social issues at a growing stage. Hence a need for a specialist paediatric gastroenterology is important”, Chairman further added.

Dr. S. Asokan, CEO, GEM Hospital Chennai said, “Our Paediatric Gastroenterology Department will be the first of its kind dedicated Paediatric Gastro centre in Tamilnadu.  This centre with State of the art infrastructure and equipments will include facilities like paediatric liver transplant, 24x7 GI bleed and foreign bodies removal centre, paediatric endoscopy services, integrated paediatric and child counselling care for all child disorders available under one roof. Dedicated evaluation and treatment provided for Jaundice in infants and children”.

Explaining about the technique of Powered Spiral Enteroscopy, Dr. P. Senthilnathan, Director, GEM Hospital Chennai said, “Around 5% of gastrointestinal bleeding occurs from small bowel. So far we have been using single and double balloon enteroscopes.

They are time consuming and interventions are not possible. With the arrival of 
Spiral Enteroscope, the entire small bowel can be examined in less than an hour and therapeutic interventions are possible”.

Dr. Vinoth Kumar, HOD-Department of Medical Gastroenterology, GEM Hospital Chennai said, “The construction of this Spiral enteroscope is unique and designed in such a way that physician performs small bowel endoscopy with much ease and in less time. Power Spiral is the World’s First Motorized Endoscope that allows for fast and gentle access to reach deep into the small intestine by pleating the small bowel onto the enteroscope using a spiral segment”.

As a part of World Hepatitis day, GEM Hospital Chennai will be conducting a Free Camp for public starting from 28th July 2020 till 7th August 2021. Various stations have been set-up to provide Free Hepatitis-B vaccination, liver scan and blood testing manned by fully equipped hospital staff.
