Tomato stock arrival in Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market reduces – echo – tomato price shoots up!!

As the stock of tomatoes arriving at the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable supermarket has reduced, the price of tomatoes has shot up!

At the same time, the prices of carrots and Lady’s fingers (okra or vendaikkai in Tamil) have also gone up!

Loads of vegetables including tomato, onion, broad beans, and brinjal (eggplant) brought in trucks, minivans, and lorries arrive at the Chennai Koyambedu vegetables, fruits, and flowers wholesale supermarket from other districts Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Karnataka, and Maharashtra states.

Yesterday (Thursday, 12th May), 6000 tones of vegetables arrived in 550 vehicles at Koyambedu Vegetable wholesale supermarket. However, the number of tomatoes was lesser. So, the price of tomatoes shot up quickly.

Day-before-yesterday (Wednesday, 11th May), a kg of Bangalore Tomato sold at Rs. 45/- per kg. However, yesterday (Thursday, 12th May) morning, it was sold at Rs. 60/- per kg.

Rural tomato, which was sold at Rs. 50/- per kg, was sold at Rs. 60/- per kg.

In retail vegetable shops, Bangalore tomato was being sold at Rs. 70/- per kg and rural tomato at Rs. 60/- per kg.
