This could be a good news for Tamil Nadu. The Madras atomic power station (Maps) will start producing 440 MWe from September.One of its two 220 MWe reactors was temporarily shut down for over a year to replace a failed transformer. While another reactor has been producing 170 MWe without natural uranium.
Citing intermittent floods and various other issues as the main reasons for less flow of natural uranium to Maps.
“Once our reactors start working to full capacity, we will supply 75 per cent of power (330 MWe) to Tamil Nadu as the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), which sells power has a power purchase agreement with Tamil Nadu; the rest of the power will be shared among other southern states,”said Dr Kotteeswaran station director, Maps, Kalpakkam
