The Minister for Food of the State Government of Tamil Nadu, Chakrapani, has informed that a new system of replacing the fingerprint with the iris (Black part of the eye) will soon be implemented in all the ration shops.

In this regard, here is a brief on the discussions during the question-answer session in the Legislative Assembly yesterday (Thursday, 12th January):

K P Mounusamy (ADMK) – Will the State Government come forward to allot all essential ration items to the ration shops in the village Kanavayur in the Veppanahalli Constituency in Krishnagiri District?

Minister Chakrapani: In the ration shop you mentioned, essential items are given every Wednesday. Further, the Pongal Festival Special Gift Pack has been given to all the ration card holders in the locality on 10th January!

K P Muthusamy: Will the government take action to distribute all the items such as sugar, wheat, pulses, oil, etc., in packets to ensure health and weight?

Minister Chakrapani: During the election, the DMK had given a promise that the essential ration items such as rice, pulses, sugar, etc., will be given in packets! This will be certainly carried out shortly. This issue will be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister!

K P Mounusamy As promised during the election, will 3 LED bulbs be given for each ration card: at a subsidized reduced price?

Speaker Appavu: As some ration card holders could not register their fingerprints in ration shops, they are not able to get the ration items. Please take action on this issue by collecting appealing letters from them, and then arrange to give the ration items!

Minister Chakrapani: This question is not related to our Department! The Chief Minister has taken action on 80% of the promises given during the election. We will rile for 5 years – there are 40 more months. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will certainly take action on all the pending election promises!

The Speaker of the Assembly informed us that the equipment registering fingerprints UNDER THE `Biometric` system is NOT FUNCTIONING IN MANY PLACES!

Speaker: The equipment may function. But for the citizens who work as labourers, their fingerprints have faded away and thus, it is difficult to register their fingerprints!

Minister Chakrapani: Some Citizens may have lost their lines on the fingers. Further, some senior citizens are unable to visit the ration shops to procure ration items! These citizens can get the relevant application form from the ration shop, fill it up, mentioning that they are not able to visit the ration shop and so give it to the person sent. Action will be taken as per this!

It has been decided to take the Iris (Black part of the eye) to be registered instead of the fingerprint and on a trial basis, this has been carried out in the Triplicane Chepauk Constituency and Perambalur Constituency. A Government Order has been issued to carry out Iris registration in place of fingerprints in all the ration shops! A tender has been floated and very soon, Iris registration will be done enabling the distribution of ration items even if the fingerprinting equipment is not working!

Speaker: They request that the filled-up formrms may be given to the Taluk Officer. Instead of this, if an arrangement Is made to get the form from the rations shop, fill up and submit it and distribute the ration items!

Minister Chakrapani: Your request will be scrutinized and action will be taken!
