The non-completion of the civil works that were halted due to heavy rains in November and December 2022 has been the real reason for the delay in the opening of Kilambakkam bus terminus in Chennai.

On the GST Road in south Chennai, CMDA has been constructing a superb bus terminus at Kilambakkam. Truth is that already the bus terminus has missed many deadlines. There has been some pending civil works to be carried out and hence the date of inauguration of Kilambakkam bus terminus hasn`t yet been fixed. This was explained by Mr. Sekar Babu, CMDA minister.

At the start of this 2023, just 80% work regarding the dome construction of the main building has been completed. It was later pointed out by a senior officer of CMDA that now dome work is almost finished and soon finishing touches would be given to it.

In December, the minister Mr. Sekar Babu assumed office and it must be noted that the minister`s first visit was his visit to the Kilambakkam bus terminus. The minister gave instructions for construction of ramps and toilets for the differently abled persons. There would be separate toilet facilities for differently abled men and differently abled women.

The superb piece of information is that the Kilambakkam bus terminus that is being built over a vast area of 90 acres at a cost of Rs 394 cr would be one of the biggest bus terminus in south Chennai. The bus terminus could accommodate 300 buses including those belonging to MTC and SETC. There would be separate entry and exit facilities for MTC buses and long distance buses.

The bus terminus at Kilambakkam would have a covered car parking lot for 325 vehicles and 2 wheelers etc. This upcoming bus terminus located between Vandalur and Urapakkam railway stations would be attracting huge crowds. Point is that CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority is having plans to request for a railway station and flyover here to ease the traffic congestion once the bus terminus gets opened for the public use.

Mr. I. Jayakumar special offer from CUMTA spoke about how once the new bus terminus gets opened at Kilambakkam there would be heavy vehicular traffic. He added that a flyover would be very essential here to ease the traffic congestion. It seems that Mr. Jayakumar is pushing for a railway station here for creating a multi modal transport hub. It must be noted that the south bound buses would be operated from here.
