The smooth running of the metro trains could get halted due to bird droppings or due to bird hits also. To overcome this , CMRL is now trying out nets and spikes to prevent birds from nesting on the OHP lines. It must be taken into account that bird droppings could corrode the train components and would affect the power supply to the traction system. In addition, when a bird hits then power lines could snap also.
The insulators of the traction system ( that supplies power to the overhead equipment of OHE for train operations at the elevated corridors)have been covered by nets and spikes by the engineers now. In the depot at Koyambedu, large sizes of similar nets would be installed soon. This would be carried out to keep the pigeons away as their droppings would damage the train`s exterior.
According to an official from CMRL, lots of money has been spent to buy different equipment to control the bird menace but they were unsuccessful. He added that the birds build nests or perch on the equipment that supply power to the train operations. He explained that if birds strike then the power supply to the trains would be disrupted and train services would be stopped.
