In a significant development, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced today the christening of a newly-built park in Adyar after the revered former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Kalaignar M Karunanidhi. The decision was made during a council meeting held on Tuesday, where a resolution was passed to officially name the park as Kalaignar M Karunanidhi park.
The park, located in Gandhi Nagar within Ward 173, has been established under the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) project. The proposal to name the park after Dr. Karunanidhi was initially approved by the standing committee (taxation and finance) on August 12, 2022. Following this, the resolution was passed during the council meeting on September 29, 2022, and subsequently forwarded to the state government for final approval.
After receiving the necessary clearance, the Greater Chennai Corporation adopted the latest resolution, solidifying the park`s new name in honor of the esteemed DMK patriarch. The process of naming or changing names of roads, buildings, parks, and playgrounds within the corporation or municipality limits requires approval from the government. The proposal was duly forwarded to the principal secretary / commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation and the municipal executive director / commissioner of municipalities for scrutiny.
During the council meeting, the corporation also informed about the successful completion of naming the newly opened level crossing bridge in Kolathur after the late DMK leader and former mayor, Chittibabu. This move further exemplifies the city`s commitment to honoring prominent personalities who have made significant contributions to society and governance.
