If you happen to come across Chennai city`s culture and TN tourism etc on the advertisements on the pillars of the elevated stretches of CMRL, then don`t get surprised!!
As a part of an effort from CMRL to tap new streams of revenue, CMRL has decided to allow advertisements of Chennai culture and TN tourism on its pillars of the elevated stretches now. It is now brought out that the bids have been floated and a contractor would be selected in a few months.
Non-fare box revenue:
It was later pointed out by an officer from CMRL that advertisements would be painted on the pillars on Thirumangalam- CMBT, CMBT- Ashok Nagar, Ashok Nagar- Ekkattuthangal, Ekkattuthangal- Alandur, Saidapet – Guindy and Guindy – Alandur stretches. By this the non-fare box revenue would become more.
He added that though ticket fares bring in revenue but it was not sufficient. The operational expenditure has been met now. It must be taken into account that the metro train patronage has been increasing with about 2lakhs travelling per day. As a result, the expenditure would also increase. There is a huge need for non-fare box revenue now.
Various types of non-fare box revenue:
Various types of non-fare box revenue could be obtained by leasing out the spaces present in the metro stations to retail outlets, allowing firms to keep their company names as prefix to the station names, putting advertisements on the pillars etc.
It must be recalled that the first elevated stretch of CMRL from Koyambedu to Alandur was thrown open to the public in the year 2015.
