The central government has officially declared that, commencing October 1, birth certificates will be recognized as standalone identity documents.
Under the provisions of the Birth and Death Registration Act of 2023, birth certificates will be accepted as valid identity documents for a range of purposes, including obtaining a driving license, securing admission to educational institutions, and for various other official procedures.
This Act enables the issuance of birth certificates as standalone documents, facilitating their use in matters such as educational institution admissions, acquiring driving licenses, obtaining voter ID cards, enrolling for Aadhaar cards, registering marriages, and pursuing government employment opportunities.
Union Minister of State for Home, Nithyanand Roy, introduced the Birth and Death Registration Bill in Parliament. It is noteworthy that the bill received unanimous approval via voice vote in the Lok Sabha on August 1 and in the Rajya Sabha on August 7.
This move is set to streamline administrative processes and make it easier for individuals to access various services and opportunities by using their birth certificates as a valid form of identification.
