If all goes well Chennaites can get fresh vegetables and fruits at their doorsteps. The Tamil Nadu State Government is toying on the idea of Koyambedu-on-wheels plan.
This would be modelled on the lines of Amma Canteen where food prepared and served by members of self-help groups can be got very cheap. These canteens, which have been functioning in all the 200 wards of the Chennai Corporation from February, have become a huge hit with the city`s residents.
The state government is now toying with replicating this success in selling vegetables and fruits. It is felt that loans can be arranged under Tamil Nadu Urban Livelihood Mission or Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY), a centrally sponsored scheme for poor women to help start the business.
