Electricity Department Grants Relief: Extended Payment Period for Cyclone-Affected Residents in Tamil Nadu

Posted on: 15/Dec/2023 11:21:35 AM
The Department of Electricity wishes to inform residents in the four districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, affected by Cyclone Michaung, about an extension in the electricity bill payment period. Due to the cyclone`s impact causing floods and disruptions in power supply, the consumption meter readings could not be taken, and residents faced difficulties in making online payments.

The regular payment period for domestic power consumers is within 20 days of receiving the bill, with penalties for delayed payments. However, in light of the challenges posed by the cyclone, the Department of Electricity has granted a concession to residents, allowing them to pay their electricity bills for the period from December 4th to December 17th by December 18th without incurring any penalties.

In a notification released by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (TANGEDCO), the following details were highlighted:

"Due to the fury of cyclone Michaung, floods occurred in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts, leading to water stagnation in several areas. Consequently, consumption readings for the period from December 4th to December 7th were challenging to obtain. For places where meter readings were unavailable, the November consumption will be considered the same as October`s. Payments will be collected accordingly, with the extended payment period now until December 18th.

If any penalties were imposed for failure to pay between December 4th and December 7th, they will be adjusted against the next month`s payment.

This concession specifically applies to consumers residing in low-lying areas. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during these challenging circumstances."

Please make your payments by the revised deadline to avoid any inconvenience or penalties.
