Is the purpose of providing tokens for receiving the flood relief amount served?
After Cyclone Michaung that caused floods in Chennai, the TN government is now distributing tokens for the residents in Chennai. With these tokens, the public would be able to get the flood relief amount is well known.
The news that has emerged now is that the residents belonging to localities like Perungalathur, Peekankaranai and Nanganallur etc are not aware about the distribution of the tokens as no PDS staff has informed them about the distribution of tokens.
Yesterday, 15th of December, in the morning, PDS staff went to a random street, sat down in a corner and asked the residents to collect the tokens. Bitter truth is that many residents did not know about the token distribution till afternoon yesterday. The residents later rushed to the spot (after coming to know about the distribution) to collect the tokens from the staff and this led to confusion.
As the names of most of the residents in these localities were not present on the list, they were sent back by the staff. These residents were asked to come back after a few days.
Just 700 families were listed on the Nanganallur PDS shop number 10 out of a total of 1800 families. It was later brought out by Mr. V. Rama Rao, secretary of Nanganallur Peoples Welfare Association that they do not know about the process used to select the names. He added that the purpose of providing funds would not be served if some residents get the amount whereas others residing in the same locality do not receive the funds.
It must be noted that the PDS staff do not visit the homes separately, instead just sit down in a particular place and issue the tokens to the residents.
