After the sale of subsidized food at Amma Canteen besides rice and vegetables at cooperative stores it is now Amma water. Yesterday Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated the `Amma Mineral Water` scheme on the occasion of former Chief Minister Annadurai`s 105th birth anniversary.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated the water production unit set up by the Transport Department at suburban Gummidipundi through video conferencing.
Under the `Amma Mineral Water` scheme, quality and affordable drinking water would be provided to the poor and middle class people at Rs 10 a bottle.
`Amma Mineral Water` would be sold on long distance government buses and at all bus terminus in Chennai and bus stands in all districts across the State. The water manufacturing units, to be established by the State Transport Corporations, would make available one litre of mineral water bottle at Rs 10 each, ensuring safe water and reducing the financial burden of the people. In the first phase, a production unit was established at suburban Gummidipundi with a capacity of three lakh litres per day.
The transport corporations would sell a litre of bottled water at Rs 10 as against Rs 15 by the Railways and Rs 20-25 by private players.
Nine more water production units would be established across the State.
