The Tourist Trade Fair is organized annually by the Department of Tourism of the State Government of Tamil Nadu at Island Grounds, Chennai Metro City. Additionally, during the Deepavali festival, cracker shops are set up every year. A hotel, owned by the Department of Tourism of the State Government of Tamil Nadu, is also operational at Island Grounds, Chennai Metro City.
The Island Grounds cover an area of 30 acres, divided into two sections of 18 acres and 12 acres.
In the budget presentation for the Financial Year 2022-23, it was announced that an urban square, an open-air arts arena, and exhibition stalls for product display and sales would be constructed on the 30-acre land at Island Grounds, Chennai Metro City, at a cost of Rs. 50 Crores.
Following this, Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister Ramachandran and the Minister for Religious Endowments P K Sekar Babu visited Island Grounds in July 2023 to conduct a survey. Subsequently, Minister Sekar Babu announced the allocation of Rs. 1000 Crores for the Development of North Chennai, suggesting that this project could be undertaken in this area.
The Minister further stated that a detailed draft plan would be prepared and submitted for the approval of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Following approval, tenders would be floated for the execution of this project.
With the current status, tenders have now been issued for the execution of this project. Under this initiative, the Island Grounds` two sections, totaling 30 acres, will be integrated. The first phase of this project aims to construct a world-class Urban Square, Exhibition Campus, and an open-air theatre.
