A team of doctors at GEM Hospital and Research Centre in Chennai has successfully performed a critical kidney transplant on a 21-year-old young man from Pattukkottai, Tamil Nadu, who initially sought treatment for kidney failure. The patient, named Aravind (name changed), faced numerous life-threatening diseases, including chronic kidney disease, acute pancreatitis, pancreatic abscess, sepsis leading to septic shock, drug-resistant intra-abdominal lymph node tuberculosis (TB), and Guillain-Barre syndrome-a debilitating neurological disease. Despite pre-transplant immunological challenges and a stormy post-operative period, Aravind was discharged on December 18, 2023, a month after the successful surgery.
Dr. P. Senthilnathan, Surgical Gastroenterologist & Director at GEM Hospital, highlighted the complexity of Aravind`s case, involving abdominal issues, TB, and Guillain-Barre syndrome. The medical team successfully treated these conditions, including a special plasma exchange treatment for Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Dr. K. Balamukunthan, Nephrologist at GEM Hospital, commended the successful high-risk kidney transplant. Aravind`s mother generously donated her kidney for the transplant, and post-surgery complications were promptly addressed through emergency surgery.
Describing the challenging post-transplant emergency surgery on Michaung cyclone day (December 4, 2023), Dr. Senthilnathan shared the team`s dedication despite adverse weather conditions. Dr. S. Asokan, CEO and Director, emphasized the importance of early screening and detection, praising GEM Hospital`s excellence in complex surgeries using laparoscopic and robotic techniques.
Dr. C. Palanivelu, Chairman of GEM Hospitals, lauded the commendable efforts of the surgical team (Dr. P. Senthilnathan, Dr. K. Balamukunthan, Dr. Vaanmathi, and Dr. Yuvaraj), reaffirming GEM Hospital`s commitment to advancing medical standards with advanced technology.
