The Chennai Municipal Transport Corporation has issued a tender for the procurement of 500 electric low-floor buses in response to rising public transport demands stemming from population growth and industrial expansion. Currently operating 3,436 buses on 659 routes daily and serving 33.60 lakh passengers, the corporation aims to address the need for additional buses, particularly in suburban areas.
Initially planning to purchase 100 electric buses, the corporation has now expanded its initiative with a tender for 500 electric low-floor buses, including 400 ordinary and 100 air-conditioned ones. To support these electric buses, the corporation will establish battery charging centers at major workshops and bus stations.
In a bid to streamline operations, bus operation and maintenance will be outsourced on a cross-cost contract basis. Eligible companies are invited to bid for the operation and maintenance of these electric buses.
The gradual rollout of the new buses over the coming months aligns with the corporation`s commitment to meeting the growing demand for public transportation in Chennai and its suburbs.
