Many parts of Chennai on Monday received intermittent showers after the revival of the northeast monsoon. Although the rainfall on Sunday night contributed only a few millimeters to the rain table, heavy showers continued in some parts of the city on Monday morning. While low-lying areas in the city started flooding, vehicular traffic was slow-moving on main roads such as Anna Salai due to the morning rains.
The northeast monsoon returned to the city after a long break as the depressions and cyclones that formed in the Bay of Bengal moved towards Andhra Pradesh had taken away the chances of the state having continuous rains.
Weathermen say the rains will continue in Chennai and other coastal areas in the state at least for three more days. The amount of rainfall may intensify if the low-level circulation that is causing the showers strengthens into a weak low pressure or a depression.
