Due to the increase in number of diabetic patients, the Tamilnadu government will soon have a plan of serving insulin counters at a subsidized rate across 19 Government hospitals. Also the counters will sell immuno-suppressants for renal transplant recipients at lesser rates. Such a kind of insulin counters is already functioning in kilpauk Medical hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Hospital since 2010.
The informants from the Health department stated that the Chief Minister J.Jayalalitha will soon launch these counters. Government hospitals have been dispensing the free insulin and medicines for both Type I and Type II diabetics. These counters will sell four types of insulin medicine at a subsidized rate of 80-90, and hence the financially weaker division of people can also afford it.
The Director of the Medical Education has sent directions to the chief of the government hospitals to furnish these counters for about 200 sq ft, which should be sited near the entrance along with air-conditioning and refrigeration amenities. Also these counters sell immuno – suppressants for government hospital renal transplant patients at a discount rate of 70 percent. TamilNadu Government will have wholesale purchase of these drugs and serve to the counters.
