After a period of 20 years, THHB resident flat owners at Puliyur, Kodambakkam have been sent a circular asking them to pay amounts ranging from Rs. 1.8 to Rs. 3.5 Lakhs to get the sale deed of their flats.
In 1993, the
single-bedroom flat cost Rs. 2.29 Lakhs. There is a total of 428 flats,
comprising 64 two-bedroom flats, 124 single-bedroom flats and 240 flats
constructed in 10 blocks.
Balconies and
ceilings have already started crumbling and falling. The residents live in
constant fear.
The residents reacted
aggressively to this rather late demand. They are unanimous that the quality of
construction was poor: the overhead water tanks were resting on weak and
brittle concrete slabs and pillars.
Several owners had
sold their flats at a pittance and shifted elsewhere.
TNHB officials said
they had issued the circular following a High Court direction. The officials
also claimed that there was nothing wrong with the quality of the construction.
They added that the maintenance of flats was the responsibility of the owners
and occupants.
